What is Tafoni? This Italian word meaning "cavern" describes the natural weathering patterns you see here in this picture taken from one of hiking tours along the bluff. Also referred to as "honeycomb weathering" this cavernous weathering occurs within the splash zone where sea water collects in small depressions on the rock. When the water evaporates, the crystallizing salt pries out the sand grains, forming a larger pocket, and the cycle continues. Come experience this natural wonder with us! Come out for a hike!
