When we discuss architecture as an abstraction of the landscape, we gain greater insight into our relationship with the environment, our surroundings and one another. It's an invitation for a shared experience and unique connection to place.
- Margaret Lindgren, Owner & Guide of Unbeaten Path Tours & Yoga
Considered as one of the earliest ecological designs, the vision of The Sea Ranch coincided with and reflected the renaissance of environmentalism in the 1960s and 1970s. Our Unbeaten Architectural & Landscape Tour of The Sea Ranch provides guests with dynamic dialog as well as spectacular views of many of the famous, better known structures of The Sea Ranch, such as Condo 1 by MLTW, the sod-roofed houses of Joseph Esherick, as well as an expansive view of Phase One of The Sea Ranch's development period (great for photography).
In addition, owner/guide Margaret Lindgren shares her unique perspective that delves beyond the concepts of Lawrence Halprin's master plan to reveal a fascinating clarity of how we can learn, grow and evolve as individuals (and a collective) through the models of nature and the philosophies of The Sea Ranch.
With a professional background in Architecture & Design, as well as direct experience working within the Architectural Design Review Department for The Sea Ranch Association, Margaret Lindgren has created something unprecedented in Sonoma County - A comprehensive, insightful, powerful and passionate Walkabout Experience of this world renowned location!

"We HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking this tour! Margaret's ability in describing the architectural and landscape philosophies gave us a much deeper understanding and appreciation of this special place - and her knowledge of the history, flora & fauna was an added bonus. This tour was so delightful, informative and entertaining we booked another tour for our weekend stay! THANK YOU, Margaret!" |
"We had a magical, perfect tour with Margaret, who knew the history, architecture and the land so well. It was well worth the time to have a guide to so enrich an area we already knew, but now know much more intimately. Meeting Margaret was magical and the tour was wonderful! Thank you, Margaret!" The Sea Ranch has become part of our cultural heritage. The buildings of The Sea Ranch earned international recognition and significance soon after their completion and, almost sixty years later, continue to capture the imagination of architects, designers, and visitors alike. During a time of increased consciousness around issues of climate change and land stewardship, the theme of “living lightly on the land” continues to be relevant. (as presented in Journey to The Sea Ranch, by the Environmental Design Archives (EDA) at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), in collaboration with the Architectural Archives of the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn)
